Year 8 & 9 Rugby -v- Carisbrooke College

Christ the King College 34 Carisbrooke College 17

The joint Year 8 and 9 team followed up their victory over Medina in December with a hard fought win on Vectis Field over local rivals Carisbrooke College.

This was a very entertaining and competitive game, always played in the right spirit and refereed very well by sixth former Joe Greedy. Christ the King had a little more experience and combined more effectively as a team, which helped them to secure the win. Yet some players also got valuable experience, playing their first or second game of rugby ever. Carisbrooke also had a host of players new to the game, so it was pleasing to see so many new recruits to rugby enjoy the match.

Christ the King College scored first through Alfie Foster after a period of early stalemate, but Carisbrooke were soon on terms to show that they would not lie down easily. With the edge in the set-pieces and in the rucks, Christ the King College built pressure, adding tries from Sam Woods and Ben Sanderson, along with Foster's second. Jake Puckett converted one of these with a great kick. However, Carisbrooke College had the final say in the first half, with a converted try; this left the home side leading 22-12 at half-time.

Defences tightened in the second half and the Carisbrooke College scrum improved, but Christ the King College held the edge. Jake Bushnell showed his pace to finish off a good move for the fifth try, Puckett again converting. The gallant visitors again fought back through one of their big runners, before The Try of the game. Man of the match Sol Wood won a superb turnover at the tackle area, before following the game plan and taking the penalty quickly – Louis Herbert carried on the move and timed his pass perfectly to set speedster Woods free for his second try. Apart from the man of the match, so many players played extremely well, but the coach chose Sam Woods as backs man of the match, and Ned Guy as forwards man of the match, for being first to most rucks and leading by example.
