As Christ the King College celebrates its successful transition into a fully-fledged 11 to 19 Christian Secondary School the Careers Department would like to update you on some of the exciting programmes that are in place to support our students as they mature into young adults.

Following the success of the annual ‘Options’ process, which supports Year 9 students as they make the very important decisions surrounding GCSE’s, we would like to assure you that this year will again see a structured programme of information and assistance to guide both parent and student during this period.

Year 10 students continue to study towards their GCSE examinations and in order to support their choices we will be offering them the opportunity to partake in a Work Related Learning exercise. Our Work Experience Programme will be run throughout the whole of Year 10, allowing greater flexibility when looking to place a student with an employer. Application forms are available in U5, the Careers Centre.

Year 11 students have been offered the opportunity of a ‘Pathways’ interview to guide them as they plan for a future beyond Year 11. We would encourage as many students as possible to remain with us and join our very popular Sixth Form community. However, we recognise that this may not be the best step for some of our young people and in that instance we will offer guidance on alternative choices for the future. Family interviews with students that are struggling to decide on a future pathway will also be offered.

Year 12 are embarking on their AS studies and will hopefully have settled into a study pattern that will allow them to succeed. Fortunately, our purpose built Sixth Form offers many opportunities to study, both in, and beyond, the classroom. A number of University visits will be planned throughout the year, with Mr Goodhead leading on the organisation of these. Please let him know if you have a request for a visit to a specific University; if we have enough students interested in the trip he will endeavour to make it happen.

Mrs Murphy-Dunn, Mr Goodhead and the Careers Department have been busy supporting a number of Year 13 students as they undertake the UCAS application process. Our first cohort of Year 13 students has seen eight applications for an Oxbridge place and a significant number of candidates applying to Russell Group and specialist Arts Universities.

We have been fortunate in being able to welcome a variety of Guest Speakers into Christ the King College and are currently building on the past success of the Speaker Programme to secure a broad and interesting range of academics, political personnel and business people to share their experiences with the students.
